Even the impossible knocks on the door sometimes

“The universe is big. It’s vast and complicated and ridiculous. And sometimes, very rarely, impossible things just happen and we call them miracles.”
— The Doctor, Season 5, Episode 12

In life I truly believe and know that everyone can, over time and by not quitting (key being not quitting), have and be anything they want – me, you and anybody else. It is not rocket science. I know that because I know there are people without hands who rock at Tennis and because I know there are people without legs who find ways to win a medal in running 100 meters’ races, the same 100 meters’ races I used to skip when I was in high school. Also I know that next to those people there are people with healthy arms think they cannot rock at Tennis and that there are people with healthy legs think they cannot win medals in races. Either you think you can or you think you cannot, in both ways you are right.

I once had a professor who used to tell me that my writing is not good and that I should give it up, because nothing will become of me. Until now my posts have been read over 7000 times, my posts have been shared and people are talking about my texts. My almost published book has been approved by Amazon publishing and I got great reviews from the test readers. If I had listened to her, I would not do any of the things I am doing today. I would not do anything that makes me happy and brings joy in to my everyday life. So if you need any kind of a sing today, maybe this is it. Because, while following a logic of life, I figured out that the ones who will tell you that you cannot do something are the ones who have not succeed, but mostly the ones who have not even tried.

Luka Modrich will never tell you that you cannot become a best soccer player in the world. A mom who loves her child unconditionally will never tell you that unconditional love doesn’t exist. Meryl Streep will never tell you that you cannot make a living by being an actress. Two that love each other will never tell that true love only exists in black and white movies. Shakira will never tell you that you cannot make a living from singing and dancing. Oprah will not tell you that you cannot be the best host in the world.

Because they told Luka he was too short to play soccer. They fired Oprah because she, in their minds, was not good enough. Meryl Streep was rejected so many times for movie roles, because the casting director though she was not pretty enough to act. Shakira was expelled from the school choir because she, in the teacher’s mind, sounded like a goat.

In life I am trying to do myself a giant favor and instead of looking what somebody is saying, look at who is saying it and why is he/she telling me a story like that. And in a blink of an eye I understand the who and the why. In high school I was told, by many professors that I would not achieve in anything. Master’s degree, a book coming out and a 7000 views blog later, I know that more important then to give your child knowledge is to give them- wings. Or as Einstein would say – Imagination is more important than knowledge.  And it is. Of course the combination of the two is ideal.  Everything else, including a not too good written text, is only a building path to yours or mine published books.

  1. Congratulations – you should be very proud of your achievements! As a teacher, I am very careful to always support my pupils’ dreams as much as possible, because a careless comment can cut very deeply.

  4. What a fantastically inspirational post! I’m not sure some people realise the impact their words can have – which is fine when they are saying positive things, not so great when it’s putting a negative twist on things. Congrats on following your dreams and getting to where you are now, that’s no mean feat! I hope the future is full of more amazing things like this. It’s also really satisfying proving someone wrong when they didn’t believe in you!

  6. Congratulations on your tenacity to stick it out. I had a teacher early on when I was first learning to play saxophone tell me I didn’t have a musical bone in my body… then I went to University for Music Performance and today I am a paid performer and music teacher. People don’t always know what they’re talking about!

  8. It’s great to read how someone else’s mind works with this type of subject. But no I completely agree. Words are everything and can make you feel so much. I am so so careful about what I say and speak to my children because I can do so much damage or good. But good on you for keeping at achieving when you were told otherwise!

  14. Amen to this post! Amen to believing in yourself when others don’t. I am experiencing that now because I am trying to look for a job in Japan that isn’t English teaching. My coworkers are like “Even if you good at Japanese, they will never accept you. Your not Japanese”. I am like, f**** you and just keep on trying.
